Bright Signals have been the lead web, UX and tech partner for STV News for 5+ years.
Working closely with their talented team, we've completely redesigned their digital news presence into a multi-platform system powering web, native apps, and even late-night broadcast content.
Today, STV News delivers a fast, mobile-first experience for a 90%+ mobile audience – with a single content system now fuelling everything from their live site to their Apple and Android apps, and their automated NightVision TV broadcast.
The Challenge
STV needed a mobile-first news site that could handle high traffic loads while providing a modern, user-friendly experience.
Their existing platform was showing its age and struggled to meet the expectations of a fast-moving digital audience.
The goal was to create a clean, intuitive interface that could scale and adapt. From responsive layouts to fast article loading, social sharing and content tagging – everything had to feel lightweight but powerful.
The Solution
We delivered two major phases of redesign. The first focused on usability, clarity and performance with a fully responsive interface, hamburger navigation, article feeds, and sharing tools designed for speed.
The second phase simplified the experience even further and introduced real-time feeds like news.stv.tv/live.
The design process was iterative and collaborative, enabling fast progress with clear direction, delivering a mobile-first design now used across STV’s website, and native mobile apps.
The website acts as the central data source for the native STV News mobile apps we developed. It is also a key data source for NightVision, an automated TV broadcast service for which we built a dedicated interface and administrative web platform — allowing their team to create and publish editions that are then consumed by STV’s broadcast systems.
