A platform for a movement

Background

Social Bite has grown from a single Edinburgh sandwich shop into a UK-wide movement working to end homelessness through food, homes, jobs and long-term support.

As the organisation evolved, its digital platform no longer reflected the scale or ambition of that movement.

One of the core objectives for the new website was simple but significant: inspire more people to join the movement to end homelessness.

The existing website struggled to support fundraising, storytelling and campaign activity at the level Social Bite now required. Donation journeys had become difficult to manage, content lacked flexibility, and the website needed to better support future growth across the organisation.

Bright Signals worked with Social Bite to redesign and rebuild the experience from the ground up, creating a more accessible and supporter-focused website built around the organisation’s mission and momentum.

The Challenge

Social Bite’s existing website was struggling to keep pace with the organisation’s growth.

Donation journeys had become increasingly complex, creating operational challenges behind the scenes and friction for supporters trying to contribute online.

The website also needed to serve a wide range of audiences, from donors and volunteers to corporate partners and people seeking support. At the same time, major campaigns such as the Festival of Kindness required a platform that could adapt quickly and scale effectively.

Research showed that many users primarily associated Social Bite with its cafés, with lower awareness of the organisation’s wider impact. The new website needed to tell a broader story and clearly communicate how Social Bite is tackling homelessness across multiple fronts.

The Solution

We repositioned the website to become a platform for Social Bite’s mission.

Through clearer storytelling, stronger user journeys and a refreshed content structure, we helped visitors understand the full scope of the organisation’s work.

Donation opportunities were woven naturally throughout the experience, creating stronger links between stories, campaigns and action.

New storytelling features, richer visuals, video content and dedicated supporter stories help bring the organisation’s impact to life while maintaining full WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards.

Behind the scenes, a new Umbraco platform and integrated donation system gave the Social Bite team greater flexibility to manage content, launch campaigns and deliver seamless donation experiences.

Results

A more accessible, scalable and effective platform that supports Social Bite’s mission and helps grow the movement to end homelessness. Streamlined donation management through a centralised API-driven platform. Greater flexibility for internal teams to launch campaigns, manage content and create fundraising experiences independently.
